DIGGER'S REST-COIMADAI HOUSE SITE - History
The property was first purchased by John Aitken during Crown Land sales in 1856. The structure is marked on a 1977 topographic plan but not on the 1984 map. It was destroyed between 1977 and 1984 with further disturbance occuring to the chimney post 2005.DIGGER'S REST-COIMADAI HOUSE SITE - Interpretation of Site
Former house site with potential for in situ under floor deposits and outbuildings/additional features. Possibly dates from the turn of the century; demolished some time between 1977 and 1984. Artefacts include; Australian Glass Manufacturers (c. late 1930s), Northcote and Hoffman bricks (frogged), square riveted metal tank.
DIGGER'S REST-COIMADAI HOUSE SITE - Archaeological Significance
The site maintains a medium level of integrity and intactness. Part of the chimney has been destroyed since 2005 (see earlier site card). Some timber joists and floorboards remain and there is high potential for archaeological deposits to remain around the house site. There is also the potential for subsurface evidence relating to outbuildings.
DIGGER'S REST-COIMADAI HOUSE SITE - Historical Significance
The site is of local significance for its association with pastoral development of the area and for the development of the township at Diggers Rest, which was first established as a stopping point on the route to the gold fields and later serviced the local farming community.
