Statement of Significance
This wooden suspension bridge was built about 1932 by Mr Willis of Avenel. Its purpose was to provide access across Hughes Creek to Mr Willis's property, the Glenavis Estate. The bridge is located six kms. down the Tarcomb Road just to the right side of Avenel.
Although the bridge has been described by the people of Avenel as a "brilliant piece of bush engineering" it is in an advanced state of decay and dangerous to cross.
The bridge has a romantic appearance, but its significance is purely local. Nevertheless, it is a good example of the ingenuity of some Australian farmers. The construction material is of local wood and disused Melbourne tram cables. The substantial proportions of the bridge suggest that much planning and labour was consumed in its construction.
Classified: 23/11/1982
