SMITHS REEF WORKINGS - History
Smith’s Reef had two main periods of activity – Tarrangower Reform Co. (1859-c.1866); and Maldon Smith’s Reef Gold Mining Syndicate/Campania Consolidated Gold Mining Syndicate/Golden Bell Consolidated (1900 to c.1904). It appears that only one crushing battery was installed at Smith’s Reef, in the first mining period, and that any ore extracted in the second period was crushed at Fenteman’s Reef.SMITHS REEF WORKINGS - Interpretation of Site
Quartz mining from 1855 to c.1904
Heritage Inventory Description
SMITHS REEF WORKINGS - Heritage Inventory Description
Partially quarried mullock heap with a capped shaft and a section of a stone boiler setting wall. Above the machinery site is a long open cut and associated surface mullock heaps. A battery site is located at the southern end of the open cut. In the gully below is a band of well defined alluvial sinkings and several stone fireplaces. Jan 2021 update - The integrity and intactness of the evidence associated with the mining activities of the Tarrangower Reform Co. (1859-c.1866) and Maldon Smith’s Reef Gold Mining Syndicate/Campania Consolidated Gold Mining Syndicate/Golden Bell Consolidated (1900-c.1904) remains the same as when recorded in the 1990s. However, the condition of the machinery site associated with the mullock heap has deteriorated significantly. A vehicle track, probably used for firewood access, has been cut through the rear of the mullock heap As a result, more of the mullock heap is gone, the capped shaft has been buried, and some of the machinery site destroyed.
