House, 430 Hewitt Road, GOWAR EAST - Physical Description 1
The house, 430 Hewitt Road, Gowar East, has a largely open grassed setting with some trees and perimeter shrubbery.
The single storey, concrete, Early 20th Century Bungalow styled house is characterised by a gambrel roof form, together with a broken back encircling verandah. These roof forms are clad in lapped galvanised corrugated iron. Two early elongated and stuccoed chimneys with projecting tops and terra cotta pots adorn the roofline, as does the early decoration on the ridge line.
A feature of the design is the encircling verandah. It is supported by introduced widely-spaced paired square timber posts (which appear to have replaced earlier posts) and wide concrete piers with projecting cappings. An early shallow gabled portico projects over the main entrance and is adorned with ridge decoration.
Other early features of the design include the timber framed window openings and the decorative leadlight window highlights, together with the timber framed doorway with a four panelled timber door, sidelights and highlight. The aluminium framed windows have been introduced.
The concrete wall construction is of particular interest, and this house represents one of few built in the area in this manner.
The space under one side of the verandah with timber weatherboard wall cladding has been introduced.
