Statement of Significance
The house, 588 Garden Gully Road, Great Western, has significance as a predominantly intact example of the Victorian style. Built around 1888 under the ownership of a Mr. Pierlot, champagne maker at the Great Western Vineyard under the ownership of Hans Irvine, the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from a distance.
The house, 588 Garden Gully Road, Great Western, is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof forms, together with the encircling convex verandah that projects towards the front and side. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the single storey height, corrugated profile metal roof cladding, horizontal timber and stone wall construction, face red brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops, narrow eaves, verandah columns, cast iron verandah brackets and valances, timber framed double hung windows and the timber framed central doorway under the verandah. The long tree-lined gravelled drive, remnant garden setting surrounding the house, and the scrolled metal vehicular gates at the entrance to the property also contribute to the significance of the place.
The house, 588 Garden Gully Road, Great Western, is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments at Great Western in the second half of the 19th century. In particular, this house is associated with Mr. Pierlot, champagne maker of the Great Western Vineyard under the ownership of Hans Irvine.

The house, 588 Garden Gully Road, Great Western, has a rural setting comprising a long gravelled driveway lined with mature cypress and other exotic trees, and a remnant house garden with perimeter shrubbery and flower beds, other trees and open grassed areas. The property entrance has early scrolled metal vehicular gates supported by timber posts.
The single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard and stone, Victorian styled house is characterised by hipped roof forms, together with an encircling convex verandah that projects towards the front and sides. These roof forms are clad in deep red corrugated Colorbond. Early face red brick chimneys with corbelled tops adorn the roofline. Narrow overhangs are features of the eaves.
A feature of the design is the encircling verandah. It is supported by columns above which are decorative cast iron brackets and valances.
Other early features of the design include the timber framed double hung windows, and the central timber framed doorway.
