House, 8878 Wimmera Highway, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The house, 8878 Wimmera Highway, St. Arnaud, is set on elevated land surrounded by large eucalypts at the sides and rear. There is a rudimentary garden at the front.
The predominantly symmetrical, single storey, face brick, Victorian styled house is characterised by a hipped roof form at the front that traverses the site, together with double hipped (M) roof forms at the rear and a return verandah that projects towards the front. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated steel. Two early face brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops adorn the roofline. An introduced cream, brick chimney with a soldier course capping of c.1920s-1930s origin, is situated at the rear as part of a lean to addition. Modest overhangs with decorative timber brackets are features of the eaves at the front and sides.
A feature of the projecting faceted flat-roofed window bays at the front crowned with dentillated cornices. These bays are symmetrically position with an early timber framed doorway (with sidelights and highlights) between.
Other early features of the design include the shallow-arched timber framed double hung windows and the cream brick quoining about the building corners and main doorway.
The return verandah may have been introduced at an early period. It is supported by early cast iron columns with decorative capitals. These columns rest on early cast iron pedestals. The decorative cast iron verandah brackets and valances are also early. The main entrance on the front facade is accentuated by the gabled verandah portico that punctuates the front verandah. It has timber lining board infill and a projecting gable end supported by timber brackets.
Towards the rear of the house are later single storey additions.
Nearby the main house at the rear is a gabled mud brick structure and has been recently extended.
