Statement of Significance
The house at 2 Jennings Street, St. Arnaud, makes a significant architectural contribution to the local area. The Federation style of the house suggests that it was constructed in the late 19th or early 20th century, possibly for H.J. Mewkill, who took over the Napier Street chemist shop in 1899 and was listed as a Justice of the Peace in St. Arnaud in 1942.
The house at 2 Jennings Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a Federation style. These qualities include the complex roof forms, with a central gambrel roof form, projecting minor gables, and a broken back hipped roof return verandah. Other intact qualities include the single storey height, rendered brick wall construction, lapped galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, two brick chimneys with rendered banding and terra cotta pots, broad eaves with exposed rafters, timber framed double hung windows, two panelled and glazed door, concrete verandah steps, timber verandah floor, gable infill (timber battening and rendered panelling) and the elongated timber verandah brackets. The grassed areas and perimeter trees also contribute to the significance of the place.
The house at 2 Jennings Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in St. Arnaud in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and is particularly associated with H.J. Mewkill, an esteemed Chemist in St. Arnaud from 1899.
Overall, the house 2 Jennings Street, St. Arnaud, is of LOCAL significance.

House, 2 Jennings Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The house at 2 Jennings Street makes a significant contribution to the architectural amenity of the area. The house has a large front setback, with grassed areas and perimeter gardens and trees. The site is bound by a brick and timber picket fence at the front (approximately 1 metre high), and a side paling fence, approximately 2 metres high.
The single storey, rendered brick, Federation styled house is characterised by complex roof forms, having a central gambrel roof form, projecting minor gables, and a broken back hipped roof return verandah. These roof forms are clad in lapped galvanised corrugated iron. Two brick chimneys with rendered banding and terra cotta pots adorn the roofline. Broad overhangs and exposed rafters are features of the eaves. Most of the timber framed double hung windows appear to be early, as does the side two panelled and glazed door. Other features of the design include the concrete steps to the verandah, which appears to have a timber floor.
Early or appropriate decorative features of the design include the gable infill (timber battening and rendered panelling) and the elongated timber verandah brackets. The trellis verandah balustrade appears to have been introduced.
