House, 73 McMahon Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The house at 73 McMahon Street, St. Arnaud, forms part of a group of significant, single storey, horizontal weatherboard, hipped roofed Victorian styled houses at this end of McMahon Street.
This house has a front setback of approximately 6 metres, with one wide side setback forming a gravel driveway. The front garden is largely grassed with citrus and other trees, and a central concrete path. The front is bound by an altered timber post and rail, and cyclone wire fence, and is approximately 1200 mm high.
The symmetrical, single storey, horizontal weatherboard, Victorian styled house is characterised by a hipped roof form, rear skillion wing and an ogee form verandah that projects towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in painted and lapped galvanised corrugated iron. Four early unpainted brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops adorn the roofline. Narrow overhangs and worked timber brackets are features of the eaves.
The symmetrical nature of the design is emphasised by the early, central timber framed doorway with a panelled timber door and side and high lights.
A distinctive feature of the design is the front verandah, which is supported by recent timber columns with cast iron valance. The verandah floor is constructed of timber.
