House, 79 McMahon Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The house at 79 McMahon Street, St. Arnaud, forms part of a small group of three significant, single storey, horizontal weatherboard, hipped roofed Victorian styled houses at this end of McMahon Street.
This house has a front setback of approximately 6 metres, with the front being bound by a timber and woven wire fence, approximately 500 mm high. The front is characterised by an open grassed area, with a side paved pedestrian path and perimeter plantings.
The symmetrical, single storey, horizontal weatherboard, Victorian styled house is characterised by a hipped roof form, together with a hipped bullnosed verandah that projects towards the street frontage. These roof forms appear to be clad in corrugated Colorbond. Two early unpainted brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops adorn the roofline. Narrow overhangs and worked timber brackets are features of the eaves.
The symmetrical composition is emphasised by the central recessed doorway (with early sidelights) and flanking early timber framed double hung windows with narrow side windows.
Early or appropriate decorative features of the design include the turned timber verandah columns and verandah valance. The verandah floor is constructed of timber boards, and a timber lattice screen has been introduced at one end.
