Statement of Significance
The footwear store, 107-109 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes a significant contribution to the predominantly Victorian and Federation commercial streetscape. This building appears to have been constructed in the late 19th century for J.W. Durance, watchmaker, jeweller, and optician. The building also has significance for its intact exterior form, including the form and proportion of the shopfronts and ingoes (but not the construction).
The footwear store is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. Although altered, it still demonstrates original design qualities of a Late Victorian commercial style. These qualities include the plain brick parapet accentuated by a moulded projecting cornice and incised rectangular signage panels. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the location and form of the skillion verandah (including the galvanised corrugated iron cladding), and the form and proportions of the shopfronts, ingoes and doorways (but not the construction).
The footwear store is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of J.W. Durance's watchmaking and jewellery store from the late 19th century.
Overall, the footwear store is of LOCAL significance.

Shops, 107-109 Napier Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The footwear building, 107-109 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes a contribution to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly Victorian and Federation commercial streetscape.
The single storey, painted brick, Late Victorian commercial styled building is characterised by a plain brick parapet accentuated by a moulded projecting cornice and incised rectangular signage panels. The left hand side projecting verandah has been introduced in the late 20th century. The right hand side skillion verandah (clad in galvanised corrugated iron) is the original skillion verandah in this location. The verandah retains its original roof frame and the original valence sign boards exist behind a modern flat sign board.
The ground floor is characterised by introduced metal framed shop front windows with two types of tiled surrounds (introduced at different periods in the 20th century). The form and proportions of the shopfronts, together with the ingoes and doorways represent part of the original design.
