Statement of Significance
The former Lorimers Grocery building, 110 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes a significant architectural and visual contribution to the predominantly Victorian and Federation streetscape. The restrained interwar commercial style of the building suggests it was constructed between the 1920s-1940s. It is known to have been the location for Lorimers Grocery store during that time.
The former Lorimers Grocery building is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. Although it has experienced some alterations, it still demonstrates original design qualities of a restrained interwar commercial style. These qualities include the plain, dominant parapet accentuated with a corbelled stringcourse near the upper reaches, and the chamfered corner. Other intact qualities include the form of the skillion verandah and valance hoarding, metal framed shopfronts with ingoes, timber and glazed doors, leadlighted highlights, arched openings above the ingoes on two shopfronts, glazed tile surrounds, circular stylised ventilation tiles, painted and rendered brick wall construction (including the side facade), timber framed double hung side windows, raised rear section with a painted brick and corbelled chimney and galvanised corrugated iron roof that traverses the site.
The former Lorimers Grocery building is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of the Lorimer grocery business from the 1920s.
Overall, the former Lorimers Grocery building is of LOCAL significance.

Shops, 110 Napier Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The former Lorimers Grocery building, 110 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes an architectural and visual contribution to the predominantly Victorian and Federation streetscape.
The single storey, painted and rendered brick, restrained interwar commercial styled building complex is characterised by a plain, dominant parapet accentuated with a corbelled stringcourse near the upper reaches. The building addresses the corner allotment with its chamfered corner and recessed entrance below. A broadly projecting skillion verandah is a feature of the Napier Street facade with its timber hoarding valance. It is supported by introduced square steel columns and clad in introduced galvanised steel deck sheeting.
The ground floor facade features four metal framed shopfronts with ingoes, and timber and glazed doors. The two southernmost shopfronts have early leadlighted highlights. The Beauty Salon and Optometrists shops also have early arches above the ingoes, although the highlights for the latter shop appear to have either been removed or painted or boarded over. Similar treatment has also been applied to the larger shopfronts for the corner shop. Other early features of the ground floor include the glazed tile surrounds and the circular stylised ventilation tiles which are typical for interwar commercial design.
The side facade of the building is also early, with its painted brick wall construction and timber framed and double hung windows. The raised rear section of the building has an early painted brick and corbelled chimney and galvanised corrugated iron roof that traverses the site.
