House (former Ladies College), 14 Ligar Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house at 14 Ligar Street, Stawell, is set on a substantial allotment, and has an average sized front setback. The front comprises a recent garden with perimeter flower and shrubbery, and a recent brick fence with piers at regular bays.
The asymmetrical, single storey, predominantly horizontal timber weatherboard, Victorian styled house is characterised by a long hipped roof form that traverses the site, together with a gable roof and bullnosed verandah that project towards the street frontage. There is also a skillion roof at the rear that has been introduced. These roof forms are clad in green painted galvanised corrugated iron. Two early rendered brick chimneys with projecting tops adorn the roofline. Narrow overhangs are feature of the eaves.
A feature of the design is the bullnosed verandah. It appears to be supported by introduced timber columns with introduced timber bracket and fretwork valances.
The projecting front gable is clad in early timber panelling simulating blockwork, with projecting timber quoinwork at the corners. Other early features of the design include the four panelled front timber door with sidelights, timber framed double hung windows, and the turned timber finial in the gable end.
The form of the projecting faceted bay may be early, although the timber windows could have replaced earlier windows but are appropriate. The timber panelling under the bay reflects early work.
