Statement of Significance
The house known as 'Fleurbaix' at 34 Ligar Street, Stawell, has significance as an intact example of a Late Federation style. Built in c.1919 by David White Mitchell, the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street.
The house known as 'Fleurbaix' at 34 Ligar Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a Late Federation style. These qualities include the complex roof forms comprising the central steeply pitched gambrel, together with the gable roofs that project at the front and side, and the hipped and gabled corner verandah porch. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the single storey height, face brick wall construction, lapped and red painted galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, galvanised corrugated iron porch cladding, paired turned timber verandah columns, Art Nouveau arched verandah fretwork, diagonal fretwork, timber framed casement windows with highlights, arched windows flanking the doorway under the verandah porch, corner timber framed doorway with sidelights and highlights, roof ridge decoration, face brick chimneys with rendered tops, timberwork in the gable end, gable ventilators, broad eaves and the window hood supported by timber brackets. The front capped timber picket fence and lychgate also contribute to the significance of the place.
The house known as 'Fleurbaix' at 34 Ligar Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the early 20th century. In particular, this house has associations with David White Mitchell, original owner, who built it in c.1919 upon his return from the First World War.

The house known as 'Fleurbaix' at 34 Ligar Street, Stawell, is set on an average sized allotment for the area, as has a typical front setback. The front comprises open grassed areas with perimeter flower beds. The front is bound by an early capped timber picket fence accentuated by a timber lychgate featuring a curved timber gate and curved valance.
The single storey, face brick, late Federation styled house is characterised by a complex roof forms comprising a central steeply pitched gambrel roof, together with gables that project at the front and side, and corner hipped and gabled verandah porch. The main roof forms are clad in lapped and red painted galvanised corrugated iron, while the porch is clad in unpainted galvanised corrugated iron. Three early face brick chimneys with rendered tops adorn the roofline. Broad overhangs are features of the eaves.
An early feature of the design is the corner verandah porch. It is supported by early paired turned timber columns with curved Art Nouveau timber fretwork valances and simple diagonal timber fretwork.
Other early features of the design include the banks of timber framed casement windows with highlights, small arched windows under the verandah (flanking the doorway), timber framed corner doorway with sidelights and highlights, timberwork in the gable ends, gable ventilators and the window hood supported by timber brackets.
