Statement of Significance
The cottage known as 'Illira' at 40 Ligar Street, Stawell, has significance as a remaining example of a Victorian vernacular miner's cottage, and for its associations with the notable local artist, Will Rees. He owned and occupied the property between 1893 and 1938. The cottage appears to be in good condition when viewed the street.
The cottage known as 'Illira' at 40 Ligar Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates some original/early design qualities of the Victorian vernacular miner's cottage style. These qualities include the double gable roof form that traverses the site, together with the hipped verandah that projects towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the symmetrical composition, modest scale, single storey height, horizontal weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, narrow eaves, timber framed double hung windows and the central timber framed doorway.
The cottage known as 'Illira' at 40 Ligar Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of miner's cottages in Stawell during the second half of the 19th century. The cottage also has associations with the notable local artist, Will Rees, between 1893 and 1938.
Overall, the cottage known as 'Illira' at 40 Ligar Street is of LOCAL significance.

The cottage known as 'Illira' at 40 Ligar Street, Stawell, is set on an average sized allotment for the area, and has a considerable front setback. The landscaping surround the house comprises open grassed areas and some perimeter garden beds and shrubbery. The front is bound by a capped timber picket fence and tubular steel and wire mesh gates.
The symmetrical, single storey, modestly scaled, horizontal timber weatherboard, Victorian vernacular miner's cottage is characterised by a double gable roof form that traverses the site, together with a hipped verandah that projects towards the street frontage. There is a rear skillion and an elevated rear addition. These roof forms are clad in green painted galvanised corrugated iron. Narrow overhangs are features of the eaves.
The front verandah is supported by introduced timber columns on brick or cement pedestals, and the verandah has an introduced concrete floor.
Early features of the design include the timber framed double hung windows and the central timber framed doorway.
