Shop (former Chaponnel, Bush & Allen Butchers), 129 Main Street STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The former Butcher's Shop at 129 Main Street, Stawell, contributes to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly Victorian and interwar streetscape.
The single storey, rendered brick, Victorian styled shopfront features an elaborate parapet having incised rectangular panelling and a raised central feature with bull's mask. The parapet also has early decorative scrollwork flanking the central feature, together with squat parapet piers at the building corners below which are early stylised consoles with small decorative banding below. Spanning between the consoles is a heavily moulded stringcourse and a large rectangular title panel. Remnants of early pilasters are evident below the incised panelled under the consoles, and a small stringcourse remains intact.
The ground floor shopfront has been greatly altered, and the cantilevering canopy has been introduced.
Beyond the main facade is a parapeted gable roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron, with face brick wall construction. There is also an early Victorian Picturesque styled outbuilding linked by a pitched roof portion that may largely be a later addition. This outbuilding has early steeply pitched gable roof forms clad in galvanised corrugated iron, face brick wall construction, decorative timber bargeboards on the gable end, and face brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops.
The south brick boundary wall spanning from the former Butcher's shop to the gabled outbuilding is also early.
The rear flat roofed brick and weatherboard building with a roller door has been more recently introduced.
