Former St Leonards Private Hospital, now Lutheran Sunday School, 27 Scallan Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house at 27 Scallan Street, Stawell, is visually connected to the St. Peter's Lutheran Church and also the Welsh Baptist Church and St. Matthew's Anglican Church in Scallan Street. The building makes a significant contribution to the architectural and historical amenity of the local area. The site is largely dominated by house, although these is a small grassed front yard and a large open side area used for carparking. The front is bound by an introduced steel mesh fence.
The single storey, horizontal weatherboard, Victorian styled, house is characterised by a gable roof form that traverses the site, together with rear hipped and gabled roof forms that project at the side. These roof forms are clad in painted galvanised corrugated iron. Two rendered brick chimneys with projecting cornices adorn the roofline. Narrow overhangs and timber brackets are features of the eaves. Other early features of the design include the timber framed double hung windows and timber framed door, and projecting bay window at the rear. The return concave verandah appears to be early, although it is supported by recent stop chamfered timber columns with timber valance bottom plates. The concrete verandah floor has been introduced.
