Why is it significant?
The house at 31 Scallan Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the late 19th or early 20th century, and demonstrates some important or appropriate design qualities. These qualities include the hipped roof forms, galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, single storey height, symmetrical composition to the front section of the house, timber framed central doorway with four panelled door and sidelights and transom window, timber framed double hung windows, and the rendered brick chimneys.
This house was owned by David Telford and occupied by the Fleetwood family prior to 1896. In the 1870s, Telford operated a business premises in Main Street between Chadwicks and the Victoria Bank. He was a grocer and produce dealer and had a Steam Chaff Cutting Mill and a Grain Crushing Mill. The Chaff and Grain Mills extended back to Scallan Street.
