Statement of Significance
The Major Mitchell Memorial off the Western Highway, Stawell, has significance as a monument to the exploration of this part of Victoria by Major Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor-General of the Colony of N.S.W., and his party, in 1836.
The Major Mitchell Memorial off the Western Highway, Stawell, is historically and socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with commemorating the expedition through the western plains of Victoria by Major Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor General of the Colony of N.S.W., and his party, in 1836. It also has associations with the Stawell Borough and Shire Councils who funded its construction in 1930 to mark the centenary of Mitchell's journey. The Memorial is recognised by the Stawell community as a significant legacy of this critical part of early 19th century Australian exploration.

Major Mitchell Memorial, Western Highway, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The Major Mitchell Memorial off the Western Highway, Stawell, has a rural bushland setting. The Memorial comprises rough hewn granite blocks forming a rudimentary obelisk and projecting base of two courses. Centrally positioned on the memorial is a plaque that reads:
"Major Mitchell Passed This Spot July 13th 1836, Erected 1930".
