ALANBANK 1 - HOMESTEAD AND DAIRY - History
The land was purchased by Richard Brodie in 1853. In 1865 it was owned by Richard Crosswell J.P., who may have established the dairy. Dairying and grazing has continued over the years, but for at least ten years the property was used as a stud for horses.
ALANBANK 1 - HOMESTEAD AND DAIRY - Interpretation of Site
Granted in 1853. Dairying possibly from 1865 (Croswell). Abandoned at an unknown time. Disused at presert. The features which go to make up this site are associated with early farming activities. It is possible that the bluestone area is associated with the original dwelling, although this is unclear. Weaver (1989) considered that the dairy and stables were perhaps linked to quarrying activity during the nineteenth century. She suggested that the dairy was established circa 1865.
ALANBANK 1 - HOMESTEAD AND DAIRY - Archaeological Significance
The area around the dairy and further afield may have archaeological potential, however golf course development is likely to have impacted on integrity of deposits. Moderate to low significance, at a local context.
Heritage Inventory Description
ALANBANK 1 - HOMESTEAD AND DAIRY - Heritage Inventory Description
The site was originally recorded as a dairy and stables by Weaver (1989). The property has been privately owned since 1853 and has been used for dairying for much of that time. More recently it has been used as a horse stud. There are two trotting tracks on the property. Seven previously unrecorded historical features were recorded.
Heritage Inventory Significance: The entire site is considered to be of local significance. The two drystone walls are assessed as high scientific significance, due to their condition. The remaining features are assessed as being of moderate significance.
