Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
Lisowen is of aesthetic significance to Queenscliffe. Despite the loss of its original colour scheme, the house is a significant example of timber 'Queen Anne' style architecture, including the scalloped spade-head picket fence across the front. The property is also of historical significance for its association with the prominent Baillieu family, who built and owned the house for many years, and subsequently leased it to at least two medical practitioners.

Lisowen, 32 Gellibrand Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
Extract from the 1982 study
Lisowen has a bayed plan which is reflected by its picturesque roofline. Half-timbered gables, cushion-capital chimneys and circular turrets are the key elements of this roof scape as well as the link with Elizabethan revival architecture. A timber return- verandah links these diverse elements establishing a horizontal line of panelled timber slatting, supported on fretted timber brackets and turned posts. Internally, the intact fretted trusswork, moulded plaster cornices, timber mantles, and lead-light windows reinforce the character of the exterior. The scalloped spade-head picket fence across the front of Lisowen completes a significant example of timber 'Queen Anne' style architecture, despite the loss of its original colour scheme.

Extract from the 2009 study
Note: An internal inspection of Lisowen was not carried out for Stage 1 of the Heritage Study. References to the interior and internal features in the following description derive from the 1984 study.)
Lisowen is a substantial single-storey weatherboard Edwardian house set back from Gellibrand Street behind a mature garden. A picket fence extends along the street boundary. The roof is a combination of hips and gables clad in corrugated galvanised steel. At the north-east corner is a projecting bay with a candlesnuffer roof. A verandah with turned timber posts extends across the street-facing (east) elevation and parts of the side (north and south) elevations. The house has brick chimneys with (painted) roughcast render and chimney pots at their tops. The fenestration of the house includes timber frame casement and double-hung sash windows.
Internally, the intact fretted truss-work, moulded plaster cornices, timber mantles, and lead-light windows complement the character of the exterior.
