Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
Samarai is of historical and architectural significance to the Borough of Queenscliffe. It is of historical significance as a substantial weatherboard house which relates to an early phase of development at Point Lonsdale. Architecturally, Samarai is significant as possibly the first house in this area to incorporate a pyramidal roof with integrated flared verandah and central dormer, initiating a pattern repeated later in other large houses in the Point Lonsdale area. The deep verandah frieze is also possibly a source for the later commonly found grid timbered friezes of nearby houses. More generally, Samarai epitomises the transitional architectural style which dominated Point Lonsdale during the growth period of Federation, and is distinguished by the prominent roof and verandah frieze with alternating panels of vertical fretwork over basket arches and 'shingled' weatherboard.

Samarai, 149 Point Lonsdale Road, Point Lonsdale - Physical Description 1
Samarai epitomises the transitional architectural style which dominated Point Lonsdale, during the growth period following Federation (see 44 Kirk Road). The broad hip roof, continuing its angle over the verandah, and the attic Jooking out to sea are part of this style. The alternating timber basket arches to the verandah with their vertical slat infill, and the shingled panels supported by fretted brackets between are an unusual combination of common elements adopted in the timber Queen Anne style; the shingling has also been applied to the attic walls. The plan of the house however appears to be Victorian in nature and the new Queen Anne style has been applied in detail only. It is probable that alterations have been carried out to the windows, the front fence has been replaced with an inappropriately high Tea Tree fence and the colour scheme has been changed dramatically.

Extract from the 2009 study
Samarai is a large attic-level weatherboard Federation house, well-preserved in its external form and details, which also appears to have been substantially restored. It is dominated by a pyramidal-form roof clad in corrugated galvanised steel with Colorbond powder coating, and has a large, symmetrically-placed central attic dormer. The verandah roofing is integral visually and structurally with the main pyramid frame, but flares at a reduced pitch above the verandah, a common Federation element. The verandah frieze is a symmetrical timber screen, quite deep in the manner of Geelong and surrounding regions, with alternating panels of vertical fretwork over basket arches and 'shingled' weatherboard. The shingling has also been applied to the attic dormer walls. The verandah posts have been fret cut, and appear to have been renewed.
The fenestration appears to be more recent top-hinged window frames; triple highlight windows are used on the north side. The door is placed symmetrically in a Queen Anne-detailed box-case with fanlight and sidelights, and is accessed via a small step up onto the verandah, with low-level balustrading. The dormer fenestration also appears to be of later origin. A non-original medium height painted timber picket fence marks the property boundary.
