RUINS (FACTORY? & COTTAGE) - Heritage Inventory Description
A four-roomed cottage and single room adjacent structure. The cottage is of random masonry construction, using small field stones, broken pieces and some bricks, set at random in a lime mortar. The walls have been rendered inside and out. There is a central door and flanking windows in both the east and west walls; these are surrounded by hand-made bricks. There are brick fireplaces in the two northen rooms. Floors were of timber, supported on projecting wall footings and (presumably) timber stumps. The cottage is surrounded by a concrete slab. Separate from the cottage, to the west, is a small stone stucture. This is also of random masonry construction, although in a different style, with the stone being more tightly packed. This structure appears to have been semi-subterranean, as steps lead down into it from a small, enclosed porch. There are small windows high in the south and west walls. The interior has been rendered and plastered, while the exterior has been rendered. There are numerous historical artefacts scattered around the site, which has been heavily disturbed by rabbits. The site has been burnt- the current owner says it was destroyed in the 1968 Lara fires and had been inhabited until that time. The site was originally a cottage and dairy/cool room. Its later use (factory - as suggested on the site card) is unknown but the current owners lived in it until 1968.
The site appears to have little archaeological potential or significance. Its main significance probably lies in the extant structures, particularly the dairy/coolroom, which is of unusual design.
