STEINFELD STREETS PRECINCT - History
First built in 1861 as sludge channels, then deepened and widened in the 1870s after the regular flash flooding of the 1860s. Walls were erected in the 1890s and channel lining took place in the early 20th century. The channels of the area were essential for hygiene, mining and structural development, particularly after heavy mining debris destroyed much of the natural water courses and heavy rains caused detrimental flooding.STEINFELD STREETS PRECINCT - Interpretation of Site
The channel refelcts different phases of construction and use.
STEINFELD STREETS PRECINCT - Archaeological Significance
The site has the potential to contain fabric relating to the construction and use of the channel, and the surrounding deposits may include material from the mid 19th centuiry onwards associated withthe settlement, and development f the town.
STEINFELD STREETS PRECINCT - Historical Significance
The site has local significance as an example of a mid-late 19th century civic infrastructure program.

STEINFELD STREETS PRECINCT - Heritage Inventory Description
Creek/channel alignment running from Grant Street, through Steinfeld Streets precicnt, and through Llanberris reserve, to York Street. In some places, the channel is lined with bricks, concrete or bluestone.
