The Port Fairy Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Pavilion - Veterans Description for Public
The Port Fairy Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Pavilion, located on 111 Griffiths Street, were erected in 1923. The erection of the a pavilion was originally proposed in 1881 for the gardens, but it was only in 1921 when the local branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League planned a Memorial Pavilion, that the plan can to fruition.
Debates about weather a memorial should be a monument or a utility were passionately argued throughout the country. "Fitting Memorials for the Fallen'" soon became one of formal objectives of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSL) after the provision of house schemes, setting returned men on the land and finding jobs for them, and generally giving a cash value to the nation's gratitude.
The RSL men wanted a building for reunions, "in order that the spirit of comradeship which had animated them on the fields of battle would be sustained. " A more expensive option was to have two memorials one monumental and the other utilitarian. At Port Fairy in 1922 the Council gave formal approval to erect a grandstand in the Port Fairy Gardens. The following year the grandstand was completed, at which time the clipped cypresses were planted around the oval.
In the early 1950s tenders were invited for renovations to and repainting of the grandstand. It appears that at this time the stairs were redesigned and rebuilt in their present position. At this time or perhaps in the 1960s the side changing rooms were constructed.
In 1990s substantial additions were undertaken to the pavilion. It seems that the stairs were remodelled and rebuilt and the entrances to the changing room area re-designed. Additions included the construction of the south kiosk; the three gables rear addition on the west side of the 1923 grandstand and the 1950s extension.
