Parkville Boer War Memorial Obelisk - Veterans Description for Public
The Parkville Boer War Memorial Obelisk is located on the Avenue in Royal Park. The inscription reads, "Erected in memory of Lieutenant James C. Roberts who was killed in the South African Boer War and who played as a boy in this park." Roberts came from the 1st Australian Regiment (1st Victorian Mounted Infantry). It was noted in the Melbourne Leader in 1899 that 'Lieutenant James Roberts come to the force from the corps of officers of the Melbourne University, at which he was a student dating his military service in the University Corps from February 1896. He resides at Murchison, and belongs to B Company of Mounted Rifles.' He was badly wounded in action at Pink Hill, Rensburg South Africa on 12 February 1900 and died of his wounds the next day. He is also remembered on a personal memorial at Murchison.
