The base has a hip canopy supported by a broad foliage moulding. The canopy has a gable containing a quatrofoil inscribed, facing south. The canopy is surmounted by a quatrefoil section Early English Gothic pier on a bluestone base, with bluestone shafts. The pier column bases are freestone. Midway is a sandstone moulding. The capital is finished with a prismatic pinacle in sandstone and supported on four quatrefoil inscribed gables facing the cardinal points.

Walls: sandstone & bluestone
Bairnsdale Boer War Memorial - Integrity
Excellent. The concrete apron which almost conceals the lower bluestone step should be lowered or removed. (Although the function it performs effectively of shedding water from the base of the monument is a necessary one and should be continued).
