HISTORIC ARTEFACT SCATTER AND POTENTIAL SQUATTER'S RESIDENCE, SWAN STREET BURNLEY - History
1838 - "survey paddock" was marked in a loop in the Yarra River. An 1855 map of Richmond shows a homestead marked in the survey paddock. The survey paddock was bisected by Swan Street (1880s) and by railway lines to Hawthorn (1861) and Glen Iris (1890). Yarra Boulevard was created in the 1930s and South Eastern Freeway to the south in 1962. The horticultural society of Victoria was granted 12ha in the survey paddock in 1852 for growing fruit trees. In 1891 this became part of the Department of Agriculture.
HISTORIC ARTEFACT SCATTER AND POTENTIAL SQUATTER'S RESIDENCE, SWAN STREET BURNLEY - Interpretation of Site
The artefacts in both scatters were very similar and were clearly 19th-century in date and indicate that they originate from a deposit of domestic refuse. They may have been disturbed from an archaeological deposit in the vicinity. Due to the proximity of the site to a homestead marked on an historic plan dated 1855, it is likely that the scatter is associated with a refuse pit for the homestead. The location of the site is 20-50 metres north-east from the artefact scatters. The homestead is marked just south of the bend in the Yarra on Kearney's map 1855 within "survey paddock".
