WHITE'S SLIPWAY - History
The White Brothers operated a slipway here from at least 1877. A slipway was built on the northern side of the site, with a jetty the same length to the south. The facility was still operating in 1890 and 1894 (Cox) between Pasco and Parker St. It was located on the site of the current Navy Sea Cadets. Substantial land reclamation was undertaken at the site sometime prior to 1907. Early photographs show the long pier still standing on the site in c. 1925.WHITE'S SLIPWAY - Interpretation of Site
A slipway and launchway with a bluestone base still exists on site, but it is unclear if this structure was part of the former operations. No remains of former structures are known to exist at the site, and diving was not undertaken due to low visibility conditions and toxin dangers. Sites may exist in the water, and under the reclaimed sections of land.
This was the only Naval Cadet Training Depot known to exist in Williamstown. The site has connections to the early boatbuilding trade, and is part of a landscape of boat and ship building of Williamstown.
