MARIBYRNONG SAND COMPANY JETTY AND TRAMWAY LOADING CHUTE - History
Sand was mined from this location for many years by the Maribyrnong Sand Company for use in the ceramic concrete and glass production factories further downstream. The Maribyrnong Sand Company was formed in the early years of the 20th century, and when commercial operations began, barges were used as the main form of transport. Somerville (pers comms) suggested that the sand from this site was used due to its purity, and was particularly favoured for producing optical equipment that was later patented and used by the Zeiss Optical Company.MARIBYRNONG SAND COMPANY JETTY AND TRAMWAY LOADING CHUTE - Interpretation of Site
Possible archaeological deposits associated with the loading activities may be identified both in the water and around these features. Sand was also mined elsewhere along the Maribyrnong, but this location has the most obvious visible remains. This is the only example of a sand loading chute facility found in the region.
