THE LAGOON - History
According to Leak (pers comms), the eastern foreshore area directly in front of Fort Gellibrand and the Gellibrand Quarry was once used as a small boat harbour at the turn of the 19th century. This was a common feature along the foreshore where fishermen used whatever natural feature they could find to protect their boats from the elements.THE LAGOON - Interpretation of Site
This area appears conducive for a boat haven, as the natural topography forms two groynes and the water is deep enough to bring in a small dinghy. This feature would be ideal for storage of boats in bad weather, as the natural topography breaks the sea before it reaches the relatively calm pool inside. Loose bluestone is scattered on the edges of the harbour arms, and it is unclear whether this is a product of local quarrying (from D7822-0399), or was used as a haven for boats transporting from there), or opportunistic use of local stone to take advantage of and reinforce the natural features to create harbour walls. Ringbolts embedded in local rock formations which were used as rear mooring points are anticipated to be found in this area (as have been found in numerous other areas.
