Statement of Significance
This was the second major boatbuilding industry to be established in Queenscliff. The sail loft and fisher?s cottages are still extant, and it is possible that slipway and other archaeological remains are located beneath the rear section of this block and the Queenscliff Maritime Centre.

LACCO'S THE SAIL LOFT AND SLIPWAY - History
A sail loft and boatbuilders were operated on this site by Mitzi Lacco and his daughters from 1913 until taken over by Peter Locke. Large boats were launched off the beach into Queenscliff Bight waters (which once lapped at the back of the Beach St houses).
LACCO'S THE SAIL LOFT AND SLIPWAY - Interpretation of Site
The sail loft and other buildings are still extant onsite. Possible remains of the former slipway (see below) may remain at the rear of the property and under the grounds of the former Ports and Harbours Depot Yard and Queenscliff Maritime Museum. Although it is known from historical accounts that newly constructed or repaired boats were launched directly off the beach, portable (possibly greased) timber blocks were probably used as a temporary slipway where vessels were "manhandled" over the sand. Furthermore, given the lengthy period of use of this site (from 1913 - at least 1935), large archaeological deposits associated with boat building and maintenance are probable in this area.
