WALLAN STATION COMPLEX - History
Wallan was originally known as Wallan Wallan when the station opened on 18 April 1872 but the name was shortened in 1877. In 1873 Wallan became a staff station (Waugh 2002d). Originally a single platform existed on the down side of the track but a second platform was duplicated in 1886 on the up side of the track. The original station building was located on the down platform and was built in 1876. Since then it as only been slightly modified and extended (Turton 1973:28). In the 1872 a goods shed and platform were erected on the down side of the railway line with goods shed being replaced by one brought from Tarrawingee in 1876 (Waugh 2002d). A locomotive depot and watering facilities were also located on the down side of the railway line. The first signal cabin was built in 1895 and locaed on the down platform. In 1909 a large goods yard was located on the up side of the track and was extended in 1913 to cope with traffic from Heathcote and Seymour lines (Turton 1973:28). Two engine turntables were also present at Wallan one on the down and one on the sup side of the railway lines. These turntables were built after 1929 but appear to have been removed prior to 1971 according to the railway plans.WALLAN STATION COMPLEX - Assessment Against Criteria

WALLAN STATION COMPLEX - Interpretation of Site
Wallan Station has been in use since it was opened on 18 April 1872. Archival Rail plans indicate that it was a large complex and there is potential for sub-surface deposits to exist within the site. The structural remains comprising of power poles and cement bases are likely to have been used as camp sites for rail workers at various stages of work being undertaken on the rail tracks. The outline of the camp site can be sen in the centre of aerial photograph from 1964.
