RALEIGH'S WHARF - History
The present site of Pipemaker's Park was home to the former Raleigh's Boiling Down Works. Melbourne Meat Preserving Works which was established in the 1870's. The works was the leading Australian cannery during this time (and also the world). In 1910, the site was taken over by the Hume's Brothers Cement Iron Company, which was a pioneer in the development of the centrifugal spun reinforced concrete pipe. By 1951 it was the biggest concrete factory in the Southern Hemisphere. Products from both companies were loaded onto barges and transported further downstream. A contemporary sketch from 1868 shows the site had what appears to be a wharf and possibly cargo shed on the riverfront, as well as a timber gibbet like structure to which a vessel can be seen mooring.
The current wharf site is a modern timber structure built by Parks Victoria, but appears to stand on the site of the former meat works wharf.RALEIGH'S WHARF - Interpretation of Site
The former wharf stonework is distinguishable from the smaller sized stonework of the later beaching (added in the 1920s/30s) on both the northern and southern sides of the current wharf. Vessels used the river bend north of this site to swing around for the return journey. The site is of a high level of historical significance due to its assocation with Pipemaker's Park (H1503). Vessels used the river bend north of this site to swing around for the return journey. This location also marks the end of the marine infrastructure for the Maribyrnong River, as barges were used to transport resources downriver from this point northwards.
