NEWPORT PIER/WHARF - History
The Newport Wharf or Pier was constructed sometime before 1894, from reclaimed land beside the Greenwich Pier and Ballast Wharf. Given the wharf lies on course of the old Yarra River, it was likely to have been constructed sometime before the building of the Coode Canal in 1879 and subsequently became obsolete as it was longer on the river frontage.NEWPORT PIER/WHARF - Interpretation of Site
The pier probably predates the construction of the Coode Canal, and is subsequently one of the few remaining piers associated with the old Yarra River Course. The pier was one of the earliest to be built in this area, and hence was a major transportation hub for many years, and hence has local heritage significance. The river end of the wharf has disappeared with the construction of the "Warmies" water discharge outlet from the modern Newport power station, but remains of the training walls on the northern and southern end are likely to remain under the landfill.
