STRINGERS CREEK, WALHALLA - History
European activity began with the discovery of gold in the area in 1863. The township, of which the creek in the deep, incised valley is an integral part, was at its peak in the late 1800s. Floods have altered the course of the creek, as well as destroying many buildings in the town, over several years. The course of the creek was altered in the southern section, after 1952 floods. Walhalla was one of the main gold producing areas in Victoria between 1885 and 1908STRINGERS CREEK, WALHALLA - Interpretation of Site
Almost the entire creek from the Chinese gardens in the north to the railway reserve in the south is sensitive for historial archaeology. The creek banks and bed are a palimpsest of the history of the European use of the creek with elements from mining, housing, industrym civic works and flood mitigation along the creek where it runs through the town.
