ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SITE - History
Site of the first Roman Catholic place of worship in Warrnambool. In the year 1850 a small wooden church was erected facing Kelp Street. A presbytery and a small wooden cottage were built next to it. It is uncertain when the buildings were demolished but it seems that the wooden church was relocated to St Josephs on Raglan Street.
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SITE - Interpretation of Site
The construction of the brick building that is presently on the site would have had a major impact on the archaeological remains on the timber church. It is possible that post-holes associated with the church could still be present between foundation trenches.
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SITE - Archaeological Significance
The archaeological significance of the site lies in the potential of the remains to provide information on early ecclesiastical architectural and construction quality in Warrnambool. Archaeological deposits from refuse and cess pits may provide some insight into the health and living conditions of the clergy who first lived on the site.
It is likely that post-holes associated with the chuch could still be present between the foundation trenches for the strip footings of the current building. The car park to the rear of the building appears to follow the original slope down to the west and so there is some potential for remains assocated with the site being present. The bowling greens have been cut inot the natural slope and no remains associated with the church would have survived within the footprint of the greens. Apart from post-holes which would delineate the size and orientation of the church other archaeological remains that can be expected to be present would be post-holes associated with other buildings, such as a presbytery, fences, and refuse and cess pits.
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SITE - Historical Significance
The site is historically significant as it was the location of the first Catholic church in Warrnambool.
