Sir Edward Weary Dunlop Benalla Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Sir Edward Weary Dunlop Benalla Memorial, located in the Rose Gardens on Bridge Street, was erected on November 10th 1996. It is dedicated to the memory of Sir Edward Weary Dunlop, a Benalla local and Second World War hero. In 1942, Dunlop was in command of the No.1 Allied General Hospital at Bandoeng, Java when the Japanese invaded and he became a Prisoner of War. Transferred to the Burma-Thailand Raliway in Singapore, Dunlop continued to work as a doctor saving many men from the harsh conditions of camp life.
Sculpted by Louis Laumen, the memorial comprises of a dramatic scene where two men assist a weak, emaciated figure. One of the plaques is inscribed with Donald Stuart's memory of Weary Dunlop: "When despair and death reached out to us Weary Dunlop stood fast, a light house of sanity in a universe of madness and suffering."
