Statement of Significance
C Listed - Local significance
[Additional Information provided informally by Heritage Advisor, 22 December 2016:
The dwelling, first known as "Coladgyn", was first built in 1907 to a design by Laird and Buchan, prolific Geelong architects (Laird & Buchan Contract Books, Geelong Heritage Centre). It was constructed for Jared Morland Bailiff (born in Ashby/Geelong West in 1865). He was also one of six children to Jared Bailiff (1833-1902) and Elizabeth Jane Skews (1841-1924), and grandson of Thomas and Isabella Bailiff of Cumberland, England (Pioneer Families in Victoria online).
Jared Morland Bailiff (first owner of 69 Aberdeen Street) married Elizabeth Sarah Bird in 1898 (Victorian Births, Deaths & Marriages Indexes online). Jared Bailiff (known as Morely) was a clerk with the legal firm, Whyte, Just and Moore, which still operates in Malop Street. Apparently he was one of Geelong's foremost cricketers, member of the Corio Bowling Club and a keen oarsman. Unfortunately, he had a "serious breakdown" in 1918 which forced his resignation, sale of 69 Aberdeen Street, and relocation to Melbourne (Geelong Advertiser, 25 Nov 1918, p.4). He died on 15 June 1940 at his residence, "Craigens", 41 Pt Nepean Road, Elsternwick (The Argus, 17 June 1940, p.4).
Alexander McDonald, a park surveyor, purchased "Coladgyn" in 1918-19 and he lived there until c.1924 when it was sold to Margaret Webb, a widow (Newtown City Council Rate Books 1921-25). She leased it to M. Meagher in 1928 who sought registration of the dwelling to be used as a boarding house (Geelong Advertiser, 15 November 1928, p.7).]
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
An interesting Edwardian timber house built in 1907. It has Art Nouveau decorative elements and strong formal characteristics, including an octagonal belvedere, decorative brackets and window hood. It is architecturally significant locally, as an interesting Edwardian style house demonstrating the introduction of innovative stylistic and formal elements and as one of a relatively intact and most varied group of 12 in Aberdeen Street. It is significant historically as a representative embodiment of the way of life of the Edwardian period in Newtown.
Intactness: The verandah has been infolled at front with a metal blind. There is a C1940 brick fence and metal gates. The Verandah has a drawf brick wall also.
