Hawthorn Rowing Club War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Hawthorn Rowing Club War Memorial is a small stone obelisk dedicated inscribed with the words"In memory of fallen members Hawthorn Rowing Club, They Fought, They Fell."
This memorial was unveiled on 11 October 1919. It was financed by the Guy Family in memory of their son Lieutenant LC (Claude) Guy. He was an outstanding oarsman listed amongst the dead. The memorial has been moved about four times since its original establishment. In 2007 it was moved into landscaped parklands behind the Hawthorn Rowing Club. It is now accessible from 2a Burwood Road.
The memorial lists fallen Hawthorn Rowing Club servicemen from World War I and World War II. In World War I forty-three men enlisted and three died. In World War II forty-eight enlisted and three died.
The Hawthorn Rowing Club run annual Service, with trumpet Last Post and Reveille at 11.00am on the Sunday prior to Anzac day.
