Point Addis RAAF Memorial Cairn - Veterans Description for Public
The Point Addis R.A.A.F. Memorial Cairn, on Point Addis Road off the Great Ocean Road, commemorates the use of the Surf Coast by the R.A.A.F during the Second World War. Point Addis and forest land to the north were acquired for training purposes including a bombing, strafing and gunnery range. The area was also patrolled by the R.A.N. and volunteer air observers to detect enemy activity. In 1944, a B25 Mitchell Bomber crashed in to the sea killing three airmen while two others were rescued by the Air Observers Corps. The three airmen killed were Squadron leader F.R. McGrill (M.I.D), Flight Lieutenant R.A. Wines (D.F.C.) and R.J. Cavanagh.
