JAROSITE MINE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Operated during the 1920s. Jarosite (red ochre) was used for paint but the lack of demand during the Depression caused the mine to cease operating in 1929.Heritage Inventory Description
JAROSITE MINE - Heritage Inventory Description
Remains of 1920s open cut jarosite mine in the cliffs on the coast. The cliff was cut down in an open cut manner and was possibly centred on a gully. A tramway in the centre of the excavated area carried the excavated material inland. Nothing remains of the line itself, but the bed is quite clear. There is an iron rod embedded in the rock at the end above the cliffs. At the unloading end are the concrete bases for plant machinery, whilst nearby is an in-ground concrete tank. Further inland is a small dam.
