Portland Reginald Saunders Memorial Plaque - Veterans Description for Public
Nearby to the Portland War Memorial Statue lies a plaque dedicated to Captain Reginald Saunders. Saunders was born in 1920 in the Portland district, joining the Australian Army during the Second World War. In 1944, Saunders became the first Indigenous Australian to be commissoned as an officer. When the Korean War began, Saunders returned to the Army serving as captain in the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, fighting at Kapyong. In later years, Saunders worked for the Office of Aboriginal Affairs as a liason and public relations officer. He died on 2nd March 1990.
