SHADY CREEK CEMETERY - History
Burial notes for one of the cemeteries at Shady Creek note that of Dr Henry Hadden, along with two earlier burials belonging to members of the Brown family and the later burial of a Richard Rainford. The following information has been supplied regarding individuals interred at the site:
Brown, Julie Costello, Died August 1860
Brown, Isabella, Died November 1860, when scaled by boiling water.
Hadden, Henry; Surgeon. Born Wexford, Ireland. Died 29 May 1869 at Crossover turnoff, Melbourne Road, aged 41 years. Coroner's inquest into his death. Buried 2nd June 1869 at Shady Creek.
Rainford, Richard Albert; Splitter. Died 25th October 1875 at Russells Creek, caused by tree falling on him. Buried 28th October 1875 at Shady Creek.
The graves of Julie and Isabella Brown are believed to be the first two burials in the Shady Creek Cemetery, although neither death was registered. They are the wife and daughter of Nicol Brown, the licensee of the Drovers Rest Hotel. In 1895, Brown is recorded as having had his wife and daughter exhumed and reinterred in Rosedale Cemetery.
SHADY CREEK CEMETERY - Interpretation of Site
This cemetery is probably one of two referred to in burial records at Shady Creek dating to the third quarter of the the 19th century.
It contains a marble headstone, approximately four feet in height, and supported on a basalt plinth. with the following inscription: "Erected to the memory of Henry W. Hadden M.D. Who died 25 July 1869 Aged 47 years. Approximately one metre to the south east of the headstone is a linear depression on the same alignment wich is suggestive of another burial.

The cemetery is likely to contain human remains in unmarked burials, some of which may have been disturbed by later activitiy.

SHADY CREEK CEMETERY - Heritage Inventory Description
This is the site of the Shady Creek Cemetery. It is positioned between Beards Track and Webbs Road. The site contains one marble headstone supported on a basalt plinth. The site is located in undulating pasture with remnant plantings and some replacement native trees at the top of a spur overlooking the narrow valley of the creek directly to the west.
