DROVER'S REST HOTEL SITE - History
The site of the Drover's Rest Hotel is identified on an 1861 parish plan. Nicol Brown, who is recorded as the licensee of the Drover's Rest on the plan, was also co-owner, with William (Billy) Hillier, of the 5370 acre Scrubby Forest Run, near Yinnar from 1848 to 1868. It is possible that Brown grew horse feed on this property, which he carted to Shady Creek, possibly to his hotel, to supply the horses of Cobb and Co, running through Shady Creek in the mid 1860s.
Brown was married 3 times, with his first wife and his daughter dying at Shady Creek and being buried at the Shady Creek Cemetery. He later served8 years of a 20 year jail term for shooting the lover of his second wife. He moved to Rosedale in 1903, and died there in 1916.
