Wangaratta Boer War Memorial Obelisk - Veterans Description for Public
The Wangaratta Boer War Memorial Obelisk is located on Ovens and Docker Streets inside the War Memorial Gardens. The monument was made by Hoskins & Co. Hawthorn and resembles a small basalt obelisk set on four stub columns above a plinth, with inscriptions on white marble slabs set into the basalt. It was unveiled by local soldier Col. John Hoad on 9th April 1903 to commemorate the declaration of peace at Pretoria in 1902 and the end of the Boer War. The marble slabs feature the names of four soldiers from Wangaratta, Milawa, Greta and Eldorado who died serving in South Africa. It stands next to a memorial dedicated to the First World War, Second World War and Vietnam.
Specific Memorials for the Boer War are quite rare. The presence of two separate war memorials placed side by side together in the one area is even more so. The Wangaratta memorials are both restrained and elegant in design, with their tall, slender shapes set off by the vertical planes of the cathedral and bell tower in the background. Their garden setting is enhanced by the beautiful trees around the site.
