Statement of Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
A characteristic Edwardian timber house built in 1913. It is architecturally significant as characteristic of the Edwardian domestic style, but with some eclectic and interesting details, such as the Art Nouveau influenced organic valence details and Asian influenced yin yang motif. The early instance of a corner window, usually said to have been introduced in the 1930s is a significant innovation. It is historically significant as a representative embodiment of the comfortable and assured family life in Edwardian Newtown.

Residence "Toyne" - Physical Description 1
A triple-fronted timber Edwardian hip-roofed house. The left and right side rear bays project as gables. A verandah extends across the front, returning at right under the hip. Upper gables have ripple-iron and jetty on ogee brackets over panels of roughcast and a wavy palisade. Under, are plant forms and the yin yang motif in the valence fretwork, with triple corner posts.
There is a rare casement corner window at the angle, on ogee bracket, with arched valences. Posts have incised moulds at dado level. At right is a skillion window-hood on decorative brackets. The chimneys are rendered, with a brick frieze and terracotta pots.
