Former Duke of York Hotel, 213-215 High Street, Prahran - Physical Description 1
The former Duke of York Hotel occupies the site on the north-east corner of High and Clifton streets, Prahran. The hotel is a double-storey, rendered masonry building designed in a stylised Grecian Revival mode. The High Street facade is symmetrically composed about a recessed first floor balcony, which is flanked on either side by pilasters and paired timber-framed windows with multi-pane upper sashes. The facade is surmounted by a broad pediment with an anthemion finial at its apex making an overt reference to Classical Greek architecture. The neo-Classical effect of the facade design is further enhanced by a strongly moulded cornice at parapet level with prominent block modillions over the first floor balcony. The Clifton Street elevation takes a similar form to the High Street facade but with the pediment and first floor balcony forming part of a shallow projecting bay.
The hotel facade remains substantially intact to its c1927 state although some modifications have been made to the ground floor including bricking up of a doorway and three window openings under the Clifton Street balcony. The interior of the hotel was not inspected during the preparation of this report but is understood to have been extensively refurbished.
