What is significant?
Bendale, a two storey block of two residential flats at 446 Punt Road, South Yarra designed by F.L. & K. Klingender and constructed by 1934 is significant. The significant attribute is the high degree of external integrity of the building, which retains the original Streamlined Moderne form and detailing and the unusual Baroque style buttress.
Later alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
Bendale is of local architectural and aesthetic significance to the City of Stonnington.
Why is it significant?
Architecturally, as an example of a flat design by architect Frederick Louis Klingender from the end of his career. Klingender was best known for his Arts & Crafts and Tudor Revival residential designs, both as part of partnerships Klingender & Alsop and Klingender & Hamilton, as well as in his final practice with his son, Keith. Bendale is an unusual example in Klingender's oeuvre of the Moderne style. Aesthetically, it is distinguished by the striking, graceful and unexpected addition of a Baroque buttress to the facade. BENDALE - Physical Description 1
Bendale, 446 Punt Road, South Yarra, is a two-storey building which contains a pair of flats. It is situated quite close to the front boundary, behind a low rendered fence with clinker-brick coping.
Bendale is a very unusual combination of a Streamlined Moderne building with a Baroque grace note. The building has smooth rendered walls with a clinker brick plinth and a band of the same just beneath the eaves. The hip roof has wide eaves and is covered in Marseille tiles.
Moderne details include a solid curved balcony with incised horizontal lines and a pipe railing tucked back on the north side of the building, sheltering the entrance to the ground-floor flat. Windows are two-over-two double-hung sashes with horizontal muntins. The French doors on the first-floor facade also have horizontal muntins and a criss-cross pipe-rail balustrade.
The most unusual feature, which elevates a neat but standard pair of flats into a work of art, is a massive buttress on the north corner of the facade, next to the entrance to the first-floor flat entrance stairs. At the top of the buttress is a concave and then a convex curve, evoking the Baroque. The convex curved section is finely detailed, with grooves running vertically down it. The combination of the rendered finish and the Baroque buttress suggests the Spanish Revival, but is far from the standard application of this style.
