St Elmo, Residence - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION
127 Elizabeth Street is a unique brick cottager of remarkable integrity. It is probably built of bricks from the nearby brickyards and, being built as a bricklayers own home, it displays extraordinary detailing designed to show the tradesman's skills. The diagonally laid bricks below the eaves are similar to ones in McNichol Street but in this case they continue along the side elevation. The other side elevation has a party wall - a rare occurrence on the 1850's when building regulations were non-existent. The chimneys are the most extraordinary feature of this house. These are four in all: two square base. The double hip roof is clad in slate at the front and corrugated iron at the back. The concave verandah appears to be original and is of solid timber construction with fretwork, brackets and pendant drops. The ends are unfilled with a combination of vertical boarding and lattice. There are the remains of a side picket fence and various outbuildings. The house has a high degree of integrity.
