Statement of Significance

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Historically, built for one of the towns more successful doctors, Dr. Stephen Smith, the house was occupied over a longer period by the prominent Alfred Grimwade, member o t he important Grimwade family who managed the Felton Grimwade and resulting chemical manufacturing companies after the founders death in 1910. Architecturally, it is a superior and early example on a Statewide basis of the American Queen Anne revival style, a style of which Geelong has some of the States best examples.

De Garis House - Physical Description 1
The house is two-storeys, of red brick and in the American Queen Anne revival style which was emerging at the end of the 1880s and had achieved full expression by the early 1900s. Using the characteristic heavy turned timber joinery, the house has carved and fretted timber detail with Chinese bamboo motifs used in the balustrading. The use of the cantilevering balconies provides a picturesque aspect to the already informal massing resulting from the plan and roof forms. Unfortunately, the view to the house was severely compromised by the erection of Baxter House. Remnant garden elements include a palm and evergreen shrubs at the former residential entrance. The design is one of a small group of Queen Anne style houses erected in Geelong during the 189Os, all similar in scale and form and each erected for one of the towns elite ie. 17 Pevensey Street
External Integrity
Minor alterations have been made to the rear east elevation added porch but otherwise the house appears to be near to its original form externally with the promise of surviving interiors. Streetscape Contribution Now obscured by the unsympathetic Baxter House, views to the house can only be obtained from the south and its context is limited.
